Charles Rist has reached the final 6 in an International Competiton to design a Spitfire Memorial for the City of Southampton, UK. The sculpture will stand 55m over the waterfront next to a brand new 19m Ocean Terminal only 2 miles from the Supermarine Aviation site where RJ Mitchell developed the aircaft. The winner will be announced in November and the sculpture should be in place by the end of 2011, in line with the 75th anniversary of the Spitfire’s maiden flight at Eastleigh.

Update. I found out on the 3rd of November that unfortunately I have not won the competition. However, it appears an entry that was not shortlisted has been awarded the prize. As I now understand this is due to an administration error on behalf of the Spitfire Tribute Foundation.
